The movie was a huge success and starred Jane Fonda as the main character in 1968. It was directed by Roger Vadim who at that time was married to Fonda. Fast forward to today, the current Hollywood has released news about remaking this iconic film but with an interesting change—instead of featuring the original star Jane Fonda, it is Sydney Sweeney coming in to play Barbarella, notable for her roles including “Euphoria,” “Sharp Objects,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Everything Sucks!”
However, there are no details concerning the director or additional cast members apart from Sydney Sweeney in this remake project which is also a partnership between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Amazon Studios. On the other hand, Jane Fonda feels quite different about bringing back memories of her past glory days with someone else.
In a frank talk with Hollywood Reporter, Fonda admitted her hesitation to keep dwelling on Barbarella remake because she suspects that it will not be as good as its predecessor, which goes back to 1960s. She said simply: “I try not to [think about it] because I worry about what it’s going to be.”
Fonda also wondered how Sony Pictures would manage a feminist twist especially when played by Sydney Sweeney. She reminisced on how the first one went.
