Group Pushes Baseball Team to Alter Its “Offensive” Name

A summer collegiate baseball team in Georgia finds itself in the midst of a debate over its name, the Macon Bacon, prompting calls for a change from those advocating for plant-based diets. While the team’s supporters revel in their love for pork products, a push for a name alteration has ignited discussion.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has taken a stand, urging the Macon Bacon to reconsider its name due to concerns about its perceived insensitivity towards non-meat eaters and potential health risks associated with processed meats. This call for change has been amplified through a billboard campaign, aiming to raise awareness about the health implications of consuming bacon and similar products.

Anna Herby, representing the Physicians Committee, emphasized the need for the team to adopt a name that doesn’t promote the consumption of processed meats, citing the potential health hazards they pose, particularly in relation to cancer risks.

The Macon Bacon, a relatively recent addition to Georgia’s baseball scene, entered the Coastal Plains League in 2018 after fans selected the name in a vote. With a mascot named Kevin, the team has garnered attention, even earning the approval of actor Kevin Bacon, who posed with the team’s merchandise on social media.

Proposing an alternative, the Physicians Committee suggests the name “Macon Facon Bacon,” highlighting a plant-based option available in many stores.

In response, Brandon Raphael, the team’s president, defended the name, citing its appeal to fans for its playful and lighthearted nature. He also highlighted the availability of plant-based food options at the ballpark, emphasizing the team’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

While pork remains a beloved staple among baseball enthusiasts nationwide, concerns persist regarding the health implications of processed meats like bacon and hot dogs, which are linked to various health issues, including colon cancer.

The debate over whether the Macon Bacon should change its name continues, prompting reflection on the balance between tradition, dietary preferences, and health consciousness in sports culture.
