During his Senate primary victory speech on Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) faced a challenging moment when pro-Palestine protesters nearly booed him off the stage. Schiff emerged victorious in a competitive race that included notable figures such as U.S. Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, as well as retired baseball star Steve Garvey, running as a Republican.
As Schiff addressed his supporters during his victory speech on Tuesday evening, the atmosphere became tense as pro-Palestine protesters interrupted the event. A sizable group of demonstrators chanted “ceasefire now,” reflecting ongoing tensions over the conflict in Gaza. The congressman was compelled to pause his speech temporarily due to the disruptions caused by the protesters.

The progressive faction within the party has repeatedly criticized President Biden and other Democratic leaders for their failure to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Many on the left, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), have accused Biden of tacitly endorsing genocide and have refrained from pledging their support for the upcoming November elections.
Addressing the situation, Representative Adam Schiff remarked on the privilege of living in a democracy that allows for peaceful protest, amidst continued chanting from activists. Despite attempts by Schiff’s supporters to chant his name in response, their voices were largely drowned out by the pro-Palestine demonstrators.
Security personnel were observed escorting some of the activists out, although their dispersal throughout the crowd made it challenging for security to address all disruptions effectively.
Schiff briefly tried to speak over the crowd once more before concluding his remarks prematurely.
During his campaign, Schiff allocated over $12 million to ads depicting his opponent, Garvey, as a “MAGA extremist” deemed “too conservative for California.” This strategy aimed to prevent a runoff election with another Democratic contender in November. Allied groups spent an additional $7 million on ads targeting Garvey, bolstering his name recognition in the state and garnering favor among Republican voters, according to analysts.
Despite California’s strong Democratic leaning, Schiff is widely anticipated to secure victory over Garvey in the November runoff. However, some Democrats have expressed concern over Schiff’s strategy, fearing potential repercussions for down-ballot Democrats statewide.
