A father, Chris Piland, initiated a petition calling for the dismissal of his son’s teacher after discovering a discouraging comment she had written on the boy’s math assignment.
Chris Piland was deeply dismayed upon seeing the feedback his son, Kamdyn, received on his test. The teacher’s critique was particularly harsh, undermining Kamdyn’s efforts.
The assignment given to the second-grade students, equivalent to Year 3, was to solve as many subtraction problems as possible from a list of 600 within a three-minute time limit.
On Kamdyn’s paper, the teacher had commented, “Absolutely pathetic he answered 13 in 3 min! Sad,” accompanied by a drawing of a sad face.
Piland, who resides in Pennsylvania, was outraged by the teacher’s comment and launched a petition calling for her dismissal. The petition has amassed over 15,000 signatures.
He shared a photo of the homework with the caption: “My son Kamdyn’s teacher has been so rude to him and myself all year. He comes home with this, and I am beyond frustrated that someone would write this on a child’s work. Such great motivation.”
According to Chris’ online post, the school board was looking into the incident.
“Thanks to all the efforts and support of the dedicated people who signed and shared this petition, I’m happy to announce that the teacher in question is currently being investigated by the Valley View school board,” he stated.
People were appalled by the teacher’s actions. Commenters remarked:
“I don’t even have a child, and this is sickening to me. This is so beyond unprofessional and just wrong.”
“No teacher has the right to write such awful comments on a young child’s work.”
Rose Minniti, the school superintendent, commented: “It’s a personnel issue, and the results of that are not going to be dictated by social media. It’s going to be dictated by the facts and evidence. As always with everything, we’re going to try to do what’s best for the students and what we need to do for the employee under investigation.”
Rose Minniti, the school superintendent, stated, “This is a personnel matter, and the outcome will not be influenced by social media. It will be determined by the facts and evidence at hand. As always, our primary concern is to do what’s best for the students and address the needs of the employee under investigation.”
