Navigating the internet can sometimes make me feel out of touch, even though I don’t consider myself old. The ever-changing online landscape often introduces me to unfamiliar slang or trends that leave me feeling like I’m playing catch-up.
Perhaps you’ve had similar experiences. I’ll come across language that feels foreign, only to realize it’s just the latest trendy slang. Or I’ll discover a new cultural movement, like ‘canceling’, and wonder when I missed the memo.
Then there are the online fads that seem to come and go in the blink of an eye. While I might not have paid much attention to them, they often gain immense popularity during their brief time in the spotlight.
Some of these trends, like the ALS ice bucket challenge, have positive outcomes, encouraging people to contribute to meaningful charitable causes.
However, not all online trends are beneficial. Some are even dangerous, like the infamous tide-pod challenge that reportedly gained traction in 2018.
Now, brace yourselves, because there’s a new trend emerging, primarily among young people, and it revolves around group photos.

A new trend called ‘nose covering’ has been gaining traction online. As the name suggests, people use their hand to cover their noses, and consequently, a significant portion of their face, to avoid appearing in photos even when they are part of the group.
Strange? Definitely. But that doesn’t make it any less real.
Some internet users have speculated that this trend might be a secret signal between people, but the explanation is much simpler than that.
British parenting expert Amanda Jenner explained to Fabulous, “Using covers is the only way they can remove themselves without actually upsetting their parents by refusing to be in the photo.
“We as parents want and insist on capturing the moment, but to a teenager, this is a big deal. Teenagers often go through a phase where they’re not comfortable with their appearance, whether it’s due to acne, braces, or just a lack of self-confidence.”
So, while the ‘nose covering’ trend may seem odd to some, it highlights the complex relationship teenagers have with their self-image and the pressures they feel in the age of social media.

Jenner also pointed out that ‘nose covering’ might be particularly important for young people who are concerned about their image being shared online and potentially mocked by their peers.
“Their peers can often share the photo and make fun of it, which can be very damaging to their confidence and may lead to other issues,” she said.
The expert advised parents who notice their children engaging in this practice: “Remember that this phase is a normal part of growing up, where seeking independence and establishing personal boundaries are key developmental milestones.”
