TikTok User Faces Backlash Over Tipping Controversy
A TikTok user recently found themselves at the center of an online storm after sparking a heated discussion about tipping practices at restaurants. The video, which has accumulated over 10,000 views, underscores the significance of tipping in the dining experience.
In today’s digital age, social media platforms frequently host debates on tipping customs in the United States. This optional practice has become a contentious topic, with many expressing frustration that a standard tip of 15-20% is often deemed insufficient if it falls below 20%.
The controversy began with a video posted by a restaurant worker named Lillie, known on TikTok as @mylasoasis_. In her video, which has since been removed, Lillie made a bold assertion: if you cannot afford to tip your server, you should reconsider dining out.
“Eating out is a privilege, not a right. If you cannot afford to tip 20%, you can’t afford to eat out,” Lillie stated at the start of her video.
Lillie delved into the broader conversation about server wages in the United States. While some argue that servers should be paid differently, she pointed out that the current reality for her and over 1.6 million servers nationwide is heavily dependent on tips.
“You can complain and insist that my employer should pay me a higher wage all you want, but this is America, and that’s not the case, okay?” she explained. “I receive $3.63 from the restaurant I work at. My income, my wage, is derived from tips.”
She added that restaurant menu prices are deliberately kept lower to accommodate tipping. “The food is priced lower because you are expected to leave a tip on it,” Lillie said. “If you cannot afford to tip, then you don’t deserve to dine out.”
Comparing the situation to hiring a nanny, she continued, “It’s the same thing with a nanny. If you can’t afford to pay someone a full salary, you don’t deserve a nanny.” Lillie concluded her video by suggesting that those unable to tip should opt for takeout or visit fast-food places instead.
In the video’s caption, Lillie further expressed her frustration: “And to anyone who says we should be getting paid a higher hourly… Okay??? BUT WE AREN’T. Not tipping will only make your dining experience WORSE!!!!”
The video sparked a flurry of reactions in the comments section. While some agreed with Lillie, others took issue with her approach. One commenter, who claimed to always tip, criticized Lillie’s perceived entitlement and suggested she find a different job with better pay.
Another user echoed this sentiment, stating, “If you can’t live off your job pay, find another job. This is ridiculous.”
However, many supported Lillie’s stance. One person shared, “LITERALLY… I make $2.13 an hour, and we literally don’t receive paychecks at all.” Another user encouraged Lillie to “SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.”
Some offered practical suggestions, such as supporting businesses that pay fair wages if they believe tipping is unfair. Others maintained that tips should reflect the quality of service, with one user commenting, “I tip based on service. I always tip 20% or more unless the service was exceptionally bad.”
