Things took a strange turn when New York Attorney General Letitia James addressed Al Sharpton’s National Action Network headquarters in Harlem, New York, to support the mayoral campaign of City Council President Adrienne Adams. During her speech, AG James began to express her frustrations about President Trump allegedly stalking her.
In this bizarre and absurd incident, which took place on May 3, AG James claimed that President Trump is dispatching individuals to her residence to stalk and follow her throughout the city. Her statements came just days prior to the FBI initiating an investigation into her for multiple alleged instances of mortgage fraud.
Regardless, during her address to Al Sharpton’s organization on May 3, AG James asserted that Trump had sent people to create a disturbance outside her home while she attended church, and that these supposed agents of Trump broadcasted the incident on social media. She stated, as reported by the New York Post, “They got individuals coming to my house, standing outside my house. Last Sunday – church Sunday while I was in church – these individuals were in front of my house, taking pictures and then streaming it, putting it on social media.”
Furthermore, she maintained that this entire situation is unfolding solely because she pursued legal action against him, disregarding the fact that such legal actions would naturally provoke him, and that she is now experiencing the consequences of her own actions. She exclaimed, as noted by the New York Post, “This isn’t nothing more than a revenge tour! This is nothing more than vindictiveness! This is nothing more than an individual who is upset at me because we secured a $454 million judgment against him and his family and his company!”
James’s attorney, Abbe David Lowell, echoed similar sentiments in a statement, asserting, as reported by the New York Post, “This appears to be the political retribution President Trump threatened to exact that [U.S. Attorney General Pam] Bondi assured the Senate would not occur on her watch,” he stated. “If prosecutors are genuinely interested in the truth, we are prepared to meet false claims with the facts.”
On the other hand, the purported cases of mortgage fraud seem to possess considerable validity. For instance, Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte claimed that James “consistently misrepresented the same property as having only four units in both building permit applications and various mortgage documents and applications,” in order to secure a lower mortgage rate under the federal Home Affordable Modification Program. In truth, the residence contained five units, which would have rendered it ineligible for the program.
Additionally, AG James is accused of designating a property she acquired in 2023 as her “principal residence” even though it is located in Virginia while she resides in New York for her role as AG and her campaign for the position. New York law mandates that its attorneys general must live in the state for five years prior to running for office and must maintain residency while serving in that capacity.
Democratic political consultant Hank Shienkopf, in remarks to the New York Post regarding why James is emphasizing this issue despite evidence against her, stated, “She’s doing whatever she can to alert her supporters that the future does not appear promising, and they should be informed, which energizes that audience and excites them. It prepares them to take action, and she will do everything possible to confront whatever challenges may arise.”
