Allegations Against Sen. Adam Schiff Threaten His Political Future

Newly declassified FBI interview reports and testimony from a Democratic whistleblower are placing Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) under intense scrutiny. The whistleblower, a longtime Democratic staffer on the House Intelligence Committee, alleges that Schiff authorized the leaking of classified intelligence during the Trump–Russia investigation to politically damage then-President Donald Trump. According to the whistleblower’s FBI statements beginning in 2017, Schiff allegedly told committee staff that “the group would leak classified information derogatory to President Trump” and that such leaks could be used to “indict” him. When the staffer objected, calling the plan unethical and possibly treasonous, he claims he was dismissed from his position after informing the FBI. The whistleblower also alleged that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) acted as a conduit for the leaks and that Schiff believed he would be appointed CIA Director if Hillary Clinton had won the 2016 election.

Despite repeated reports to the FBI—including to agents in 2023—the whistleblower says the bureau took no action. Former U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman warned that if prosecutors pursue the case, Schiff could face severe penalties. Tolman noted that leaking classified material carries fines of up to $250,000 per count and potential prison sentences reaching 20 years if prosecutors establish intent to undermine the United States. He added that the purpose behind the leaks could play a critical role in determining the severity of any charges, suggesting that broader conspiracy or interference statutes might also apply.

Critics like former Trump official Kash Patel argue the FBI’s inaction exemplifies a broader pattern of protecting politically connected figures. Patel pointed to what he described as selective enforcement under Director Christopher Wray, claiming the bureau ignores serious misconduct by political allies while aggressively pursuing opponents. Schiff, who has previously denied leaking classified information, has not yet issued a public response to the latest allegations, characterizing similar past claims as partisan efforts to discredit his oversight role.
