A large and fast-moving fire erupted Saturday afternoon in the Pamplona Alta sector of San Juan de Miraflores, Lima, damaging dozens of homes and leaving hundreds of residents displaced. The blaze spread quickly through a tightly packed hillside block made up largely of improvised, highly flammable structures.
Firefighters deployed multiple units to contain the flames, bringing the incident under control after several hours. Initial assessments from authorities and local media report that between several dozen and more than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed, though the total number of affected families continues to rise.
The fire is believed to have intensified after reaching a clandestine fireworks workshop, triggering small explosions captured in videos shared by residents. Investigators are now examining the illegal pyrotechnics site as a likely point of origin, while the official cause remains under review.
Emergency teams are assisting displaced families, many of whom lost all belongings and are in urgent need of shelter and humanitarian support. Authorities are expected to release an updated damage assessment in the coming days.
