Indiana Congressman Jim Baird is mourning the loss of his wife, Danise Baird, who passed away early Sunday morning due to complications stemming from severe injuries she suffered in a car accident earlier this year.

The crash occurred on January 5 while the couple was traveling back to Washington, D.C. The accident, described at the time as serious, initially left both Jim and Danise hospitalized. Early reports suggested they were expected to recover, despite the severity of the collision.

According to a statement released by the congressman’s office, Danise and Jim had been married for 59 years. Their relationship began in high school, and over the decades they built a life grounded in faith, family, and public service. The statement described Danise as a devoted wife and mother of three who served as the heart of their family. The family has requested privacy and prayers during this period of grief.

Following the accident, both were treated for injuries. Congressman Baird, 80, was discharged from the hospital one day after the crash, though he wore a neck brace for several weeks during his recovery. Danise’s injuries were far more extensive. She sustained 15 fractures and breaks and remained hospitalized until January 12.

Their son, Beau Baird — who currently holds his father’s former Indiana legislative seat — had been sharing updates on social media about his parents’ condition. In early February, he noted that his mother had taken her first assisted steps since the accident, acknowledging that while progress had been made, her recovery would be long and challenging. He also explained that Danise preferred to keep her health matters private.

On Sunday morning, Beau posted the exact date and time of his mother’s passing before an official confirmation was issued. News of her death was later reported by outlets including the New York Post.

Lawmakers from across the country offered condolences to the Baird family. New York Representative Elise Stefanik praised Danise for her steadfast support of her husband’s public service, describing the couple as humble and dedicated individuals. Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon also shared sympathies, reflecting on their decades-long marriage. Indiana State Representative Jake Teshka expressed prayers for the family during the difficult weeks and months ahead.

In separate political developments, the Supreme Court of the United States announced Monday that it will allow New York’s current congressional district map to remain in place while legal challenges continue. The unsigned emergency order did not include detailed reasoning, which is common for decisions made through the court’s emergency process.

The ruling temporarily blocks a lower court decision that had determined the map unfairly diluted the voting strength of Black and Latino residents. By keeping the map intact during the appeals process, the Court’s decision makes it likely that the current district boundaries will be used in the upcoming midterm elections.

The case involves New York’s 11th Congressional District — the only Republican-held district within New York City — represented by Nicole Malliotakis. Malliotakis had filed an emergency request after a state judge ordered changes to her district. In response to the Supreme Court’s action, she stated that the decision protects Staten Island and southern Brooklyn voters’ ability to elect a representative aligned with their priorities.

The outcome could carry national implications, particularly in a narrowly divided House of Representatives where control remains closely contested.
