A new Rasmussen Reports poll indicates that most Americans support impeaching Judge James Boasberg, the federal judge allegedly connected to the Biden administration’s “Arctic Frost” investigation. The probe reportedly involved surveillance of Republican lawmakers, drawing sharp criticism from GOP leaders. According to the survey, 67% of likely U.S. voters view “Arctic Frost” as a serious scandal, and 43% describe it as “very serious.” Only 26% said they did not find the controversy significant. These findings come as Republican members of Congress move to make Boasberg the first federal judge impeached since 2010. Historically, the House has impeached 15 federal judges, but only eight were removed by the Senate.
House Republicans allege that Boasberg and Judge Beryl Howell signed non-disclosure orders shielding nearly 200 subpoenas issued under Special Counsel Jack Smith. The subpoenas reportedly targeted more than 430 Republican organizations, officials, and donors. Critics, including Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), have labeled the operation a political “fishing expedition.” Reps. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) and Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) have announced plans to draft impeachment articles against Boasberg, accusing him of “weaponizing” judicial authority. Boasberg, an Obama appointee and current chief judge of the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C., has previously faced criticism for rulings perceived as unfavorable to Trump administration policies.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) has also proposed removing Boasberg under Article III, Section 1 of the Constitution, which allows judges to serve only “during good behavior.” Biggs argues this would permit Congress to remove Boasberg without Senate impeachment. He and other Republicans contend that Boasberg’s actions — including blocking Trump-era deportations — exceed judicial authority and threaten the balance of powers.
